This course, taught by an experienced children’s book illustrator, will teach students the fundamentals of creating a picture book. Students will create a mock-up or “book dummy” from a story of their own or of their choosing. This can be an original story, a fairy tale, an alphabet or counting book or the instructor will help you choose a project.
Students will gain an understanding of text placement, page design, illustration, pacing and the strategic use of page turns. There will also be discussions about the current state of children’s publishing and how to submit to a publisher or agent.
Students may use any medium they choose such as watercolor, acrylic, collage, pen & ink, printmaking or photography. Students who are comfortable using digital media may also use those.
